High-Impact Volunteer Service Opportunities

Volunteers at City Union Mission are integral partners with the Mission staff to help further the Kingdom work of Jesus Christ. A High-Impact Volunteer at City Union Mission is someone who has:

  • Sensed God’s Calling to use their God-given gifts, skills and talents to serve the poor and homeless of Kansas City.
  • Sensed God’s leading to Partner with City Union Mission to fulfill the Great Commandment of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and making disciples.
  • Made a 6 to 12 month Commitment to regularly serve on a weekly or monthly basis in a volunteer capacity that expresses their gifts, talents and passions.

Nursery Care Assistant -

Do you have one night per week once a month?

If the answer is yes, then come and show the love of Jesus to our children, while enabling parent(s) to attend Chapel.  Chapel times are Tuesdays and Thursdays  from 6:45 to 7:45 - volunteers must be available from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  A team of 3 volunteers per night is needed to play games, read stories and have fun with the younger tykes.  Call your Sunday School friends, ladies groups, and college age children and advise them of this wonderful opportunity to share some of your experiences with our kids.

 All persons interacting with our clients, must complete a background check form.  Complete and return to: Bret Kroh , City Union Mission, 1100 E. 11th Street, Kansas City, MO 64106, or you may fax to: 815-329-1453.

Writer & Editor -

The writer/editor will create copy for photos, as well as help in creating a timeline for publication before September 2010.

Clerical Assistant -

Clerical assistance is needed in several areas of the Mission. Perform office tasks (i.e. file, make copies, make phone calls, prepare information folders, create simple documents, enter data).

School Supplies Interviewer/Office Assistant -

Volunteering during School Supplies:

Have the opportunity to share the Gospel of Christ with families, while assisting with each step of the application process.  July 25 thru August 17, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 pm;  August 22-31, 12:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m.

Office Assistants must be MAAC trained. (training dates TBD and will be provided by MAAC)

Job Coach Assistant -

Expand Career Development services to individual candidates in preparation for and during their God-centered employment journey, assisting them to become self-supporting contributors to society and the Christian community. Financial counsel concerning debt, give basic Microsoft Word training,  assist with cover letter & resume creation, assist with online job searches and applications. Time commitment - 1.5 hours per client a week for 12 months.

Show the love of Jesus to children, while enabling parent(s) to attend life skill classes or chapel.
(M-F 9:00-11:00 for life skill classes) (Chapel times are Tues and Thurs from 6:45 to 7:45 - volunteer must be available from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.)

Learning Center Academic Assistant -

Empower men in our Men's Center with the academic/ career skills necessary for them to contribute to society and to the Christian community. Administer academic assessments, monitor classroom of computer stations, answer questions, possible tutoring. Must be male. (afternoon and evening hours M-F)  Urgent need for a Wednesday night volunteer from 5 to 7 pm.

Assist women and/or men in our Family Center as they go through computer programs to improve academic skills. Must be female. (afternoons M-F)

Camp CUMCITO Health Screenings -

We need medical students, doctors and nurses to perform health screenings for our campers before each camp session.  If you are available on Saturdays from 8 am to 2:00 p.m. , please assist us with getting our kids ready for camp.  All nurses and doctors must have a Missouri license.

Barber/Hairstylist - Men's Shelter -

Provide free hair-care cuts at the Men's Shelter for overnight guests.  Ministering to the needs of poor and homeless men by increasing self-esteem with hair care and grooming skills.

Public Speaker -

To represent City Union Mission at speaking opportunities.  To enable City Union Mission to accept more speaking engagements to present its ministry creating a broader base of community awareness.

Fitness and Nutrition Instructor -

Man needed to train men in nutrition and physical fitness, promoting healthy lifestyle disciplines and choices. Provide fitness and nutrition instruction, developing a health plan and program, implementation and oversight of program.

Library Assistant - Youth Center -

Impact children's lives by assisting the Education Coordinator in setting up children's library and by being involved in the upkeep and progression of the library as it develops.  Filing books, updating computer book inventory, helping in general library needs.

Assistant to Family Shelter Manager -

Assist the operations of the shelter in ministry of the guests by meeting their spiritual, physical and emotional needs.  Assist manager with evening duties.

Family Night Host -

Bring families together and instill the importance of family time once a week.  Provide entertainment (e.g., approved movie, snack, drama, special music, board games).

Enable staff to better provide for the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of guests by relieving them of the workload by managing details.  Clerical work.

Nursery Care Provider - a.m. -

Show the love of Jesus to children, while enabling parent(s) to attend Life Skill Classes to improve the quality of their lives.  Caring for children from newborn through age 5 in a group setting.

Driver for Men's Ministry Clients -

To assist City Union Mission staff by transporting Men's Ministry clients to appointments that are critical to a client's progress through the recovery and discipleship process (doctor's appointments, court dates, job interviews, etc.).

Interviewer - Community Assistance -

Share the gospel of Jesus Christ and give encouragement concerning spiritual growth by interviewing clients, sharing the gospel and filling out clothing room tickets and furniture vouchers.

Enable the health care staff to meet the medical needs of the poor and homeless, so we can share Christ and help them spiritually.  Assist nursing staff with non-medical tasks in the clinics.

Doctor - Health Services -

Assist in healing and maintaining health to those in need of medical and spiritual care.  Provide physical exams to Christian Life Program men who are new and to those who are sick.  Care for acute and chronic conditions.

Clinical Nurse - Health Services -

Assist in healing those who are sick and in need of medical care so we can share Christ and help them spiritually.  Provide health care within the realm of nursing.  Promote healing and administer medication and general health care.  Work one on one with clients.

Medical Assistant - Men's Center or Family Center -

Enable the health care staff to meet the medical needs of the poor and homeless, so we can share Christ and help them spiritually.  Assist nursing staff with medical and non-medical tasks in the clinics.

Media List Manager -

The Media List Manager will ensure that the press release list, calendar of events list, and online calendar list is kept current to increase our quality and effectiveness.

About Bret Kroh - Your High-Impact Volunteer Administrator

Bret Kroh joined the Development Team in May 2007 as the High-Impact Volunteer Administrator. He has spent 24 years in education and ministry, 11 years as youth pastor and five as an Associate pastor working with small groups and volunteers. He and his wife, Diane, live in Gardner, Kansas and have two grown children.

Bret says, “I’m excited by the challenge of expanding the development and training for High-Impact Lead Volunteers. I’m even more excited about working with these volunteers as partners in ministry.”
