Sharing God’s Love with Others
Susan Lance knew she wanted to do something to be a part of God’s work with the homeless. With her experience in human resources, serving as a volunteer job coach in City Union Mission’s Christian Life Program career development track was a perfect fit!
From helping participants write resumes and cover letters, to searching online and in the newspaper for job opportunities, Susan works one-on-one with each man to develop an action plan for finding full-time employment and then follows up with them weekly to review what he’s accomplished.

Susan Lance volunteers each week at the Mission’s Men’s Center,
assisting Christian Life Program participants with job searches,
resume writing and interview preparation.
“A lot of the men really need to know someone cares about what they are doing,” she says. “It’s easy for someone to fall into a hole and not crawl out. But there are those who do want to crawl out, and we need to be there to give that help to them.”
Sharing God’s love with others was Susan’s motivation for volunteering, but she, too, has experienced immeasurable blessings from the experience.
“It feels good to me knowing I am helping. When I attended my first graduation ceremony (for the Christian Life Program) and heard those guys up there talking about what they’ve been through and how they’ve been helped by the program and the people working the program, that told me I am making a difference,” Susan shares.
“If someone is considering volunteering at the Mission, I would wholeheartedly encourage them. They have so many different needs; everyone has a skill that could help!”
