From the Desk of Dan Doty
What is your perspective on change? Sometimes it’s good to stay the same. For over 80 years, City Union Mission has faithfully ministered to the homeless and poor. On the other hand, some change is very good. Over a year ago, we launched the RECON ministry, and it has brought new vitality to discouraged and disillusioned homeless men (read more about RECON on page 3).
But the success of our ministry brings with it a very daunting challenge (humanly speaking): We are out of room for men! Believe me, we don’t want to expand our facility we want fewer people to find themselves homeless and in need of shelter! But the fact is, the number of homeless men we serve has increased by nearly 60 percent over the last three years! We don’t have the room to adequately shelter, feed and care for so many.
Because of this record-high demand, Celebrate Hope 2005, our annual fund-raising campaign, is more important than ever. Between Oct. 1 and Jan. 15, 2006, our goal is to raise half our operating budget for 2006 funds we use to pay our utility bills and purchase food for the hungry. Please be a part of Celebrate Hope this year!
Finally, will you please pray for the Mission? Our general fund has been greatly affected by last year’s
tragic tsunami. Right now, we are approaching an $800,000 budget deficit. We’re asking the Lord (and you) to help us through this lean time.
