"Standing for Something I Believe In"
A passionate supporter of City Union Mission is a woman by the name of Alinda Murphy. By day, Alinda is a bank examiner with the Federal Reserve Bank.
But every couple of weeks, Alinda finds time to help out at the City Union Mission's Men's Center at 11th & Troost.
Alinda's volunteer position at City Union Mission is unassuming but she wouldn't think of any other assignment right now. "I am a file clerk and I am proud to say it. I work with the CLP (Christian Life Program) in the Men's Shelter and I do all of their filing. That way, staff are able to spend more time with the clients." Although that may sound removed from the action, Alinda assures it is not. "Sometimes it's like a fire station. Something is always happening."
But she did not quite see it as an important role from the very first. The first time she volunteered, she found herself wondering as she exited the building, 'I am just filing. What am I doing here? There could be other things I could be doing. I could be at a soup line. I could be directly handling people and witnessing.' "
