Serving the Lost and Forgotten for 80 Years
City Union Mission celebrates 80 years of God’s ministry to the poor and homeless of Kansas City
August 03, 2004

Who: City Union Mission has been ministering to the poor and homeless of KC for 80 years. The Mission has provided over 1 million meals in the last five years. City Union Mission provides emergency food, shelter and medical care; programs to rehabilitate and reverse the cycles of homelessness; and community assistance to reach out to low-income families and individuals to prevent homelessness before it begins.  City Union Mission is a Christian ministry committed to sharing the gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of men, women and children who are poor or homeless.

What/When: City Union Mission celebrates its 80th anniversary serving the poor and homeless in the Kansas City community. September 15, 1924 marks the day the doors of City Union Mission were first opened.

Where: City Union Mission was first located on KC’s Skid Row and has since moved to several locations. The City Union Mission Men’s Center is located on 1108 E 10th St. with an extension of their Christian Life Program (Recovery Program) located in Warsaw, MO. The Mission’s Family Center is located at 1310 Wabash.

Why:

City Union Mission shares an exciting part of Kansas City’s history. It touched the life of Kansas City’s "Queen of the Red Light District", Annie Chambers, leading her to donate her brothel to City Union Mission. The brothel was converted into a safe haven for women and families. Annie even began ministering to prostitutes, sharing the hope she found in Jesus Christ.

Two years ago, Carl came to the Mission because he had no place to go. His addiction to drugs cost him his job and family. "I tried so many times to overcome my addiction, but I couldn’t do it on my own," Carl explains. It wasn’t until Carl accepted Jesus as his Savior that his recovery began. Carl graduated from the Mission’s Christian Life Program and has remained drug and alcohol free. Today Carl works at the Mission’s Men Center in Security. "I want to let the men know how God has changed my life. You can’t do it by yourself," he concludes. And so the list continues, and will continue, of lives changed through City Union Mission.
