Thank you Hy-Vee!

On November 17th and 18th, City Union Mission teamed up with Hy-Vee, KCTV5, and PepsiAmericas to raise money to feed Kansas City’s poor and homeless. Evie Kowalewski, Corporate Relations & Procurement Specialist with City Union Mission, explains, “This is something that we have done annually for 7 years now.  That our drive coincides with the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, which is November 12th  through the 18th, sheds greater light on the tremendous need. Stuff-A-Truck has served to feed the poor and homeless in Kansas City not only during the holidays, but all year long.”

Hy-Vee Shoppers picked up $5 or $10 vouchers at the Stuff-A-Truck displays that were located near the entrances of all 22-local Hy-Vee stores. The donations made through the purchase of the gift vouchers will go to buy grocery items at wholesale for use at the Mission’s shelters.  Dennis Chapman, Associate Executive Director of Development, points out, “That Hy-Vee is agreeing to not take any profit margin for what was donated through this event is huge!  And we didn’t even solicit them. It means every dollar that our donors gave will go that much further.  Hy-Vee’s generosity is a tremendous gift during this season.”

“Hundreds of volunteers encouraged shoppers to participate is what helped to make it successful,” says Sharon Bednarczyk, Volunteer Administrator.  “Working together we can make a difference for the poor and homeless in Kansas City.”
