Ways To Give - Chicken Soup or Cash
Which Came First, Chicken Noodle Soup or The Cash Donation?
December 21, 2006
Before Christmas, Darlene Tompkins and her children, Kylie, Ryan, Kendall and Rachel, were looking for a way to give. “God has blessed us and we just wanted to find a way that would truly bless others. I really didn’t know much about City Union Mission but felt God directing me there.  After looking at City Union Mission’s website, we prayed asking God what He wanted us to do. We did know all along we were to give a monetary gift. After speaking to a lovely young woman at City Union Mission, we sent a check for $600 in order to provide a month’s supply of chicken noodle soup for the clients.”

“There are so many people who see the needs of the poor and homeless and desperately want to help us provide for them, but feel as though the logistics are prohibitive. Whatever the issue is, we want everyone to know that each person can help make a difference. You can partner with us. Your money donations are effective and they are needed,” says Lorraine Minor, Executive Director of Programs & Administration. “Don’t let logistics keep you from participating in the joy of blessing someone’s life.”

“When funds are donated for the supplies our clients use, we are often able to purchase those things at wholesale prices. We also have the benefit of no sales tax, because we are a non-profit. That means that a donor’s gift goes a lot further. $600 in our hands will buy more chicken noodle soup than if the donor bought $600 worth of the soup and brought it to us. Cash adds about an additional 10 to 15% value over the items,” explained Dennis Chapman, Associate Executive Director of Development.
