Once a year City Union Mission has a Health Fair for their employees. When Dr. Davis, family dentist, learned about it he readily agreed to participate. His treatment manager, Anna Buskirk, said, “We want City Union Mission’ employees to know that we’re here for them, and that we accept the coverage most of them have, Humana. Ensuring their dental health is another way we can be supportive of the work of the mission.”

And that is something that has become important to Dr. Davis. Last September he, along with his wife, Adriana, who is the business manager, Dr. King, who does extractions, and Anna, used their dental skills to help the poor and homeless in Kansas City. Davis Family Dental donated cleanings for 15 children from City Union Mission’s Family Center. “We wanted the kids to feel comfortable coming to see us, so we thought giving them each a hooded Chief’s sweatshirt would be a good idea. They really liked getting them.

We found that for many of the kids they needed more than just a cleaning, so we did follow-up care for them. Dental health is critical to overall health.

This was an incredibly moving experience for us. I would have to say we all fell in love with these kids. It was confirmation that we really need to be doing this on a regular basis,” says Dr. Davis. His wife Adriana agrees, “Once you see these kids you know you have to do what you can. Now we are looking at doing the cleanings and follow-up care again in April if all works out. You know the saying, 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,' is really true.”

Dr. Davis, family dentist, “is not your typical dentist,” says Anna. “Even if I didn’t work for him I would say that. He is very much into giving back to the community.”
