Rain Rain Go Away!
You Can Still Ride for BWAM!
May 08, 2007

On Sunday, May 6 600 motorcyclists with a heart for the homeless planned to ride 100 miles for the 18th annual “Bikers with a Mission” to raise money for the poor and homeless of City Union Mission.  The dangerous weather conditions prevented that.  “We do the ride rain or shine,” said Teddy Bitner, BWAM’s Director.  “We ended up with about 120 bikers compared to the usual 600, raising almost $8,500 compared to last year’s $20,630.”  Cycle Disciples of Kansas City facilitated the event.

Each year there are important items not budgeted, like baby formula, nursery equipment, eyeglasses, bus tokens for job interviews, and utility assistance.  City Union Mission relies upon BWAM proceeds to cover these expenses.  Please help us help our clients now by clicking here,  or by clicking on the donate now button.   Be sure to designate BWAM in the comments/prayer box.

You can also mail in your donation to City Union Mission at: 1100 E. 11th Street, KCMO  64104.  Again, be sure to designate BWAM.

“The shortfall resulted, but I want people to know that they can still turn in their donations, and that they also can still participate by doing the ride on a sunny day within the next few weeks,” said Sandy Baldwin, Community Relations with City Union Mission.  “We hope the amount raised will grow, providing us what we need for the poor and homeless.”

If you have questions, please call Sandy at 816-329-1477, or email her at Sandy@cumission.org.

“In spite of the many challenges it was a great day, and probably the most "fun" BWAM ever,” reported Bittner.

The rider with the most cash turned in, Ray Schneider with $1,507.00, won two Midwest Airline tickets valued at $700 (courtesy of Midwest Airline).  Jim Buchner, who raised $1,160.00, was the recipient of a beautiful Custom-Made "Big Bowie” Knife made, and donated, by Bill Miller, valued at $475.  Another of Miller’s knifes, also donated, valued at $650 was auctioned off for $300.

Biker Tom Countryman has been doing the run since 1999, “I do it for the cause.  It’s a good feeling knowing I’m helping others to get a new start.”  Ken Breedlove agreed, “It’s the right thing to do.  We need to address the issue of homelessness and poverty.  You never know when you might need in this situation.”  Ken brought along Lisa Wallace, who did the run for the first time, “I did it for Ken.  He’s so passionate about this.  We should give back because we’re so fortunate.  I also wanted to show that girls can do this too.”
