Happy Birthday City Union Mission
Kansas City’s Largest Homeless Shelter Celebrates its 81st Year Of Serving Those In Need
September 14, 2005

What: City Union Mission’s 81st birthday
When: Thursday, September 15, 2005
Who: City Union Mission is an evangelical Christian ministry committed to sharing the gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of men, women and children who are poor or homeless. City Union Mission provides food, emergency shelter, medical care, and programs to reverse the cycle of homelessness.  It also offers community assistance to prevent homelessness.  The Mission has provided over one million two hundred fifty thousand meals in the last five years alone.
Where: City Union Mission’s Men’s Center is located at 1108 E. 10th St. (10th and Troost), with an extension of its Christian Life Program (a long-term recovery program) in Warsaw, MO.  The Family Center is located at 1310 Wabash.   City Union Mission was originally located on KC’s Skid Row and has known several locations through the years.
Why: City Union Mission has been part of the fabric of Kansas City since its doors opened on September 15, 1924.  The Mission shares an exciting part of Kansas City’s history. In 1934 it touched the life of Kansas City’s “Queen of the Red Light District,” Annie Chambers, leading her to donate her brothel to City Union Mission. The brothel was converted into a safe haven for women and families.  Chambers began ministering to prostitutes, sharing the hope she found in Jesus Christ.  Like “Miss Annie,” lives are still being changed at the Mission. Johnny Evans, a former homeless guest, who now works for City Union Mission, said, “In November I got shot.  I was taken for dead for a while.  The Lord saved me, so I prayed and the Lord sent me back to the Mission.  I stayed in the infirmary for four months.  They took care of me.  They changed my bandages every day.  I had a hole in my back.  I said this is enough.  I went to the Lord and said Lord, I believe You now.  I finished the program April 30.  I’m so happy because I’ve been trying to do it so long.  The Mission is one beautiful place—it’s a beautiful place to be.”
How to Help: Help us reach our budget!  It has been projected that the Mission will end this fiscal year about $280,000 behind, unless more donations come in by September 30, 2005.  Please consider giving a monetary birthday gift to City Union Mission.  All (tax-deductible) financial donations are greatly needed and appreciated.
