Secret Santa Surprises City Union Mission
December 18, 2007

December 11th will be a day employees, clients, and shoppers at City Union Mission’s 2ND Chance Thrift Store on Wornall will never forget.  That was the day that Secret Santa and his elves walked through their doors.

Dorothy Smith, an employee at the Thrift store, said, “When I saw them give $100 to a man who I knew really needed it, I thanked them.  The leader grabbed my hand, looked me right in the eyes, and said, “You have a kindred spirit.”  Then I noticed he had put a $50 dollar bill in my hand too.  But it was what he had said to me that meant so much.  I‘m here at the mission because my heart’s desire is to feed and comfort the poor and homeless.”

“It wasn’t that they were giving money away that made this all so amazing.  No, but rather the whole store was filled with this spirit of giving and compassion.  I watched them as they talked to people.  They were so caring and humble, and did everything gently, quietly.  I heard one man say, “Now you know what this means, don’t you?  Somewhere on down the road you will have the opportunity to give to someone else.”

“You never know when or where a miracle may take place, but at City Union Mission, we experience them quite regularly,” said Dan Doty.  “And especially at Christmas time.  As much as we love the poor and homeless in Kansas City, we can’t out love God.  He proves that to us time and time again.  Just when we think our shelves are bare, He fills them up.”
