Our First Radiothon went far beyond our expectations! We tried to capture some of the moments.
Robert Christian, Church Relations Specialist tells about one of the calls he took, “This was actually the first phone call that I answered all day. The phone rang and I answered it with our scripted greeting: "Hello, thank you for calling the bed and bread hotline!"
A young voice on the other line answered in a seemingly nervous voice: "I…I think I have the wrong number." I told him that it was ok and said, "Have a great day and God bless."
Right as I was starting to hang up he spoke again:" Well actually, I want to help the homeless, but I am only 8." He continued to share that he didn't know how to help yet and that he would talk to his mom and call us back. I encouraged him and told him that any way they wanted to help would be a great thing, and then I repeated, "Have a great day and God bless."
I am not sure what came of this, or if his mother called us back or not. But I do know that I got to hear from a young boy that was willing to help. I did not catch his name or his phone number, but God knows who he is, and he knows his heart. All I can do is pray that his willingness to care for the poor and homeless of Kansas City will not go away.”
No matter how young or how old a person is, God can use them. The only requirement is that you be willing. “All the volunteers were amazing that day, but a group of three really touched my heart,” says Shawna Ketter, Corporate Relations Specialist.

“There were three ladies that came together to volunteer, a mom and her two daughters. They told me that they were here volunteering because their dad, who passed away, supported the Mission. This was the one-year anniversary of his death, so they wanted to honor him by volunteering at the Mission. They went on our website and found out that the Radiothon was on the actual day of his passing so they signed up to volunteer. You could tell that it was somewhat of a difficult day for them, but knowing that they were doing something that meant so much to their dad brought them so much joy.”
“And then there were the volunteers from ADT Securities Services, who were so very helpful. They jumped right in and did anything that we needed done. When the phones weren't ringing they were happy to fold brochures and help out in any way.”

“One gentleman was unable to donate financially, but would donate 25 pounds of USDA approved meat weekly. Wow! The men staying at our Shelter will be so blessed!”
