Captured Moments!
Our First Radiothon!
February 29, 2008

Bret Kroh, Formal Volunteer Administrator had an encounter with a volunteer that truly blessed his socks off!

“Nick had called before inquiring about volunteering at the Mission. He had been on the website reviewing it for volunteer opportunities and noticed we were going to be having the Radiothon. He asked if we needed any volunteers. I told him to check with me in
the afternoon. With the predicted bad weather, I thought there might be some scheduled volunteers that could not make it in.”

“I wasn’t in my office when he called, but he decided to take the chance and stop by.  We stepped into my office to visit. He shared his story about his spiritual journey, his brush with homelessness, and how God brought him to KC in the last 8 months to receive some ministry and biblical training at a local ministry.”

“He believed that out of his salvation and past experiences that God was moving him to be involved with men… discipling and mentoring them in their spiritual faith. That’s what prompted him to investigate volunteering and looking online for opportunities.”

“I shared with him about our High Impact Volunteering program. We talked about the spiritual mentor/discipler volunteer opportunity that we have at the Men’s Center. It seemed like a perfect match for what he believed God was calling him to do. He was interested and took the application to begin the process of becoming a volunteer.”

“I took him on a tour of the Men’s Center. At one point, we stopped at the security desk and talked with a couple of Recon clients. I introduced Nick to them and asked him if he would share a little bit of his spiritual journey with the guys. Wow! Did he ever! He shared in 3-4 minutes his story of God’s grace with more detail than he had shared with me! The guys were very taken by him and responded to his candor.”

“We came back to the Admin Building, where we were joined by his girlfriend, Alisa.  After training them both in using the phone script they joined in the phone bank volunteering for the Radiothon. They really got involved and enjoyed it.”

“When they left they both expressed how much fun they had, gave hugs, as I walked them out to their vehicles. When we got to their cars, Nick turned to me, gave me a folded pledge form, and asked that I include his gift in the total, not making a big deal about him.”

“I was shocked to discover that it was a check for $1,000.00!”

“It was amazing the level of kindred spirit that was present between us in just a matter of a few hours. We’ve talked since. His excitement about being involved with the Mission is exhilarating.”

“Pat Brown and Joanie Moritz are my special project leaders,” says Pat Brodnax, Core Volunteer Administrator.  “They love providing for the mission and are always ready whenever I call.  Plus they are very effective in their service.”  On the day of the radiothon they were scheduled for the first couple of hours, but then decided to stay for the entire day.”

“Since this was the first time we had done a radiothon, I was a tad nervous.  But when I saw Pat and Joanie come in I was so relieved,” said Karen Housholder, Media/Publicist Specialist.  “I’ve worked with them before and knew I could count on them”

Pat and Joanie jumped right in, running messages back and forth between the volunteers and the DJs.  They helped make everyone feel welcome.  When other volunteers had a question, they were quick to answer it, or find someone that could.
