City Union Mission is in the midst of crucial renovations to the men’s emergency shelter, to double capacity to 300. Dennis Chapman, Associate Executive Director of Development, said, “In 1927 construction began for the dental college, which later became our men’s emergency shelter. For many years the building served us well. However we’ve been experiencing an increase in demand for services. This year that has risen to a 20% increase over the previous one. So we’re doing what we have to do. Our Capital Campaign, to raise $12 million, was to address this by funding the building of a new Christian Life Center, doubling capacity there, as well as these renovations. Gratefully the Christian Life Center is completed and paid for.”
“However, in renovating a building as old as this one a great many unforeseen issues have arisen…issues that are costly and unanticipated. The construction crew uncovered 150 holes from dental chairs that require extensive cleanup to comply with today’s standards. On average, the cost is estimated at $700 per hole. And this is just one of the unexpected issues we have to deal with, along with increased construction costs. Now we have to raise an additional $3 million.”
“We’re seeing more of our neighbors struggling financially. People who never dreamed they would be homeless or near homeless are having to face a harsh reality,” said Dan Doty, Executive Director of the mission. “That’s why it’s more important than ever that we finish raising the additional funds required to complete our capital campaign. These challenges really just mean more people can experience blessing by being a blessing themselves.”
