Celebrate Hope 2007
Welcome to our 3rd Web Banquet!

Luke 14:12-14, "And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
For the next seven days, October 5th through the 11th, you will be able to join us by coming to the website for Celebrate Hope: Giving hands Give Hope banquet highlights, including testimonies, ministry updates, and award recipients, all without the added expense of renting a location, and the associated speaker and audio-visual costs. It's a unique way of sharing what is happening at City Union Mission using all the resources God provides to the fullest.
We hope you enjoy participating in our web banquet!

A message from Dan Doty
Welcome to City Union Mission’s second virtual web banquet for the homeless, Celebrate Hope: Giving hands Give Hope!
Every year I stand amazed at all that is going on here ... so much more than what you might expect. Having this venue for the banquet really allows us to tell more of our story. I trust you will find this experience invigorating to your heart as you walk through the week with us, discovering how your City Union Mission serves the poor and homeless in Kansas City.
Most people know that we rescue hungry and homeless people by feeding and sheltering them. It can be the first step in helping to put the pieces back together. As a Christian ministry, we recognize that the greatest need for any human being is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s only in knowing Jesus that true and lasting change takes place. We respect the dignity of those coming through our doors, each one a unique person created by God, with a name, a story, and with their very own set of unique needs.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.”Luke 12:6-7 (New American Standard Bible)
The value our Lord Jesus places upon each person is extreme, demonstrated by His loving concern that all legitimate needs are met. God has called City Union Mission to do just that. We address the needs of the whole person: the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual.

Recovery programs are offered to those ready to take the next step toward restoration. It’s thrilling to see lives changed so dramatically. Clients are forming sustaining relationships with the Lord, and families are reunited. Men and women are overcoming their addictions, learning essential new life skills, and moving on to lead productive lives.
Reaching out to the community through our Community Assistance, our Holiday Ministry, Vanderberg Youth Center and Summer Camps for Youth, are another piece of what we do here in trying to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. And our three 2nd Chance Thrift Stores offers us greater opportunity to serve both our clients, and the community, while also ensuring we make the most out of the resources God has provided through our generous donors.
We are now in the midst of our capital campaign, "Building the Walls That Rebuild Lives," which we began to address the overcrowding in our shelter and the increased demand for services, particularly for space in the recovery program. Once the project is completed we will have doubled capacity for emergency shelter to 300, as well as doubling capacity in our recovery program to 100!
We are so grateful to all our donors for their support and generosity as we witness the evidence of God’s work all around us. Each day we see the Walls going up. Now with winter coming our challenge is to meet a matching grant challenge given to us by the Mabee Foundation ... $10.5 Million by January 10, 2008. Then we can get going on readying the Mission to provide the space for the extra 150 men who so desperately need a place to stay, and to give them an opportunity to hear God’s word and put their lives back together again.
As you can tell there’s excitement here at City Union Mission. People’s lives are being transformed. And I’m not speaking just about the poor and homeless ... donors and those on staff as well. Just imagine once “Building the Walls That Rebuild Lives” is completed even more lives can be touched. I invite you to be a part of this adventure. When you invest in a life, transformation is bound to happen. I hope as you experience this online banquet you’ll be encouraged and strengthened. Look at all we can do when we work together for God’s glory, serving those in need.
Sincerely

Rev. Daniel J. Doty
Executive Director
State of the Mission
Welcome to the 2007 Celebration of Hope Banquet.
In Job, chapter 5, we read the helpless have hope because God saves them. City Union Mission is privileged, as an extension of the church, to witness the power of God in giving the helpless hope each day. We have been used by God to enable change in many lives. Our hope comes from seeing God’s steadfast hand upon this process.
As we look forward to the future we continue to rely upon God's faithfulness to provide for hopeless people.
The challenges ahead are real ones. Every year there is more need for our services. But challenges can be opportunities for us to see how God will stretch and cause change, both individually and as an organization. Facing the future requires faith, hard work, prayer and finances. Thanks to your generosity, City Union Mission has effectively provided this hope for 84 years. Please consider how you can further partner with City Union Mission by financially supporting the work for the poor and homeless in Kansas City.
Bruce Ladd
President of the Board of City Union Mission

Ways People Give
Local Airline Donates Pillows
A local Kansas City Airline just donated 100 of their business size pillows, along with 1000 pillowcases, to City Union Mission. Dan Doty, Executive Director, said:
We are thrilled to receive these. As you can imagine we go through quite a lot of sheets and pillowcases because everyday they must be laundered for that night’s guests. That’s a lot of wear and tear! We are so grateful to them.
Companies Avoid Major Expenses by Donating to Mission
Tom Tatro is the Vice President of Sales for INvironments, a company that designs offices and sells office furniture here locally. While providing his services to other businesses, he simply explained how they could rid themselves of the unwanted furniture and at the same time partner with City Union Mission. This helps his clients avoid the high cost of moving and storing unwanted furnishings.
Former Client Donates Propane
Mike Feekin, Facilities Director, was shopping for propane gas to fill tanks for barbecue grills when he encountered someone who had his life changed because of City Union Mission.

Lemonade Stand Raises Money for the Capital Campaign
Last summer sisters, Madelyn and Melissa Kemp, had an idea of how they could be a part of City Union Mission’s Capital Campaign. They decided to have a lemonade stand while their Grandmother was having a garage sale.
