Mission Moments - Snapshots from the Soul

Every person who passes through the doors of City Union Mission has a unique story to tell - every man, every woman, and every child. Some stories are gripping, some are interesting, and some are heartwarming, while others are heartbreaking.

We have captured several stories that may change the way you view homelessness forever. Here is your chance to take a glimpse into the lives of a few of our precious clients, volunteers, and donors. We hope you will take a minute to engross yourself in these powerful testimonies.  Please place yourself in their shoes, and join them in their past sorrows as well as their newfound joy.

Sheila

Sheila

Sheila's inner-city apartment was a slum.  “There were no doorknobs on the doors, and the pipes under the kitchen sink were duct taped together,” says this 26-year-old single mother.  “When the pipes broke, we had to haul water from the bathroom.”

When her landlord failed to make the necessary repairs, Sheila refused to pay rent, hoping to prompt changes.  Instead, she and her children, ages 2, 4 and 6, were evicted.

The young family took temporary shelter with Sheila’s sister, who was an alcoholic suffering from a chronic mental disorder.  “She drank up all the rent money we gave her, so we had to leave,” Sheila explains.

Sheila had no money and nowhere to turn, so she and the children moved from one homeless shelter to another.  The nights, when the shelters were open, were fine.  But when they closed for the day, Sheila and her children had to survive on the frigid streets in the dead of winter.

“It was really cold, and we didn’t have bus passes.  The kids and I just had to find somewhere to go during the day until 6:30 p.m. when we could go back to the shelter,” she says.

But this winter, Sheila came to City Union Mission and joined the New Beginnings Covenant Program, a 30-day program designed to help women and families get their lives back on track and grow in their relationship with God.

“This is a great way for me to find a house and get my life together with God,” says Sheila.

Her goal is to become a dental assistant.  “If I can get stable, I’m on my way.”

Sheila is thankful she had City Union Mission to turn to.  “They really care about helping you here,” she shares.  “It’s not just a job to them.  They try to see you through your problems because they understand what you’re going through.”

Jesus also knows what you're going through.  He walked this earth and gave His life for you!  He cares about you and is yearning to have a relationship with you.  Click here to find out more!
